In an interview, Ma Yansong stated, "I need to ensure that the building I create belongs to the future. The natural environment here is very unique, and it should be the focus of the future architecture here. Once the Grand Theatre is completed, it should be a very hospitable and approachable place for people."

The Harbin Grand Theatre is located on the northern bank of the Songhua River, inspired by the surrounding wetland natural scenery and the frozen northern landscape. It is a blend of culture, art, and nature, forming a vast landscape. In 2016, it was named "Cultural Building of the Year" by Archdaily.
