Through Ma Yansong's highly personal language, the book explains to readers the architectural concept of "Shanshui City" that MAD has been practicing all along - "Architects should depict new ideals for future cities, combining the density and function of cities with the artistic conception of mountains and rivers, and building future cities with human spirit and cultural values as the core, which can be shared by every urban resident, or called 'Shanshui City'."
"Shanshui" is the ideal state that the ancient Chinese combined the lofty spirit they felt from nature with the daily world. "Shanshui City" is not a simple "ecological city" or "pastoral city", nor is it just building the buildings in the city directly into the shape of mountains. It represents the feelings that people place in nature and the pursuit of their own spiritual world in Eastern philosophy.

Hans Ulrich Obrist, an internationally renowned curator and art critic, wrote the preface: "This book is a chronicle of Ma Yansong's exploration of the concept of 'Shanshui City'. It is about projects and daily practice. This is a powerful declaration in the face of an era where technology is supreme." Japanese graphic design master Kenya Hara personally designed the book and wrote the preface: "Shanshui City will surely become a memorable milestone that carries the oriental wisdom of 'Shanshui' architectural thought, and its influence is immeasurable." Domestic famous architectural critic Wang Mingxian and famous scholar Li Xiangning both wrote review articles for this book.
The Chinese version of Shanshui City will be published by Ideal Country Publishing in October, and the English version will be published by Lars Müller Publishers and will be released worldwide in early 2015.
《山水城市》中文版将由理想国出版于10月份发行,英文版由Lars Müller Publishers出版,将于2015年初全球发行。

During the Beijing International Design Week from September 27 to October 7, Ma Yansong will hold a new book exhibition for Shanshui City at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. On the afternoon of September 27, Ma Yansong will attend the Shanshui City Forum with several scholars and critics in the architecture/art circles, and the exhibition will officially open that evening.
