The Berlage Institute was founded by architect Hermau Hertzberger in 1989 and mainly promotes the post-structuralist school. Aldo van Eyck is its spiritual leader.

During his trip to Europe, Ma Yansong was invited to give lectures at PLÅT in Oslo and Kunstmuseum Bregenz in Austria, and to explain his recently completed competition proposal for the new building of the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The proposal was well received by the Dutch people and local media. In an interview, the people said that they hoped the government would "have the courage to choose a symbol that belongs here."
