Founded in 1952, the AIA College of Fellows recognizes members and honorary recipients for exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society. The College seeks to advance the profession, mentor young architects, and be of increasing service to society. Less than three percent of AIA members hold the FAIA designation
Ma Yansong’s work integrates creativity, functionality, sustainability, human experience, environmental sensitivity, and cultural relevance, creating meaningful environments that enrich the lives of individuals and communities. In his view, architecture is not only a technical discipline, but also a cultural practice that can restore connection between people and the world around them, allowing people to perceive emotion and the spirit of a place.
In 2014, Ma was selected as chief architect for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in the United States. Over two decades, his practice has pursued new possibilities for future living through projects such as the Fenix Museum in Rotterdam, Tunnel of Light in Japan, and Shenzhen Bay Cultural Park, Quzhou Sports Park, and the Courtyard Kindergarten in China.
Parallel to his architectural practice, Ma engages in cultural discourse through international exhibitions, publications, and public work. In 2023, he curated Blueprint Beijing for the inaugural Beijing Art Biennale, followed by his appointment as curator of the China Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. In 2025, he was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
The AIA publicly announced the 2026 class of Fellows and Honorary Fellows on February 9, 2026. The Honorary Fellowship will be formally recognized at the AIA Conference on Architecture and Design in June 2026.
