The Clover House, located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, is a children's educational institution operated by a family. To provide more educational services to the community's children, the owners decided to tear down the family home where they had lived for many years and build a new kindergarten on the same plot of land. Regarding this request, MAD's founding partner Ma Yansong said: "I think it's important to create a family-like atmosphere for this kindergarten. Therefore, we decided not to build an entirely new structure but to preserve the original wooden frame of the house and incorporate it into the new space's memory and soul." MAD's design retained the original house's wooden structure and added a white "tent shell" to the exterior, creating a futuristic, open, and cohesive space with a family-scale atmosphere. This allows the children to learn and grow in a space that embodies the past, present, and future.
Clover House is MAD's first project in Japan. It was completed and put into use in April 2016.
