Chicago is a city that has written the history of modern American architectural art, with many important works by modernist masters such as Mies van der Rohe and Wright. In order to communicate with this history and build a work that transcends the times and is full of imagination, the founder of the museum, George Lucas, the father of Star Wars, invited a number of world-class architectural masters to compete earlier this year. MAD, led by Ma Yansong, won with its romantic and inspiring plan that integrates with nature, and thus became the first Chinese architect in history to design an iconic cultural building in the Western world.

Lucas chose Ma Yansong's design not only because of the overall artistic conception it presents, but also because of the sensitivity and brave exploration of the mysterious future expressed by its interior space. It has a huge dome called the "Urban Sky Dome", where temporary exhibitions, concerts and other urban activities can be held. In the center of the dome, skylight pours down, inspiring people's curiosity to go up and explore the history of narrative art. Surrounding the dome is a circular exhibition hall that unfolds like a story, spiraling up along the slope, leading visitors into a journey through time and space - the history of narrative art and the digital media of future narratives. The museum will also interact with the public through a series of projects including an education center, a giant archive, an outdoor theater and four film theaters to fulfill its mission as an art institution. When people reach the "top" of this white mountain, they will enter a fantasy floating 360-degree panoramic viewing platform to enjoy the beautiful waterfront scenery of the entire museum park and the exciting skyline of Chicago.
Blair Kamin, a famous architecture critic of the Chicago Tribune, said in a commentary article: "The museum design announced today is an amazing turning point in Ma Yansong's career", and concluded with Ma Yansong's words: "This building is not about me, but Chicago's future after creating great modernist architecture. Architecture is about people and nature!" The Chicago Sun-Times said: "Ma Yansong is a new generation of Chinese architects who is dedicated to modern architectural design and is extremely sensitive to design content and the overall environment." Fast Company said that "the museum is a pyramid from the future."

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is expected to be completed in 2019. Its groundbreaking display of narrative art history, its integration with the environment, and its overall continuous spatial experience will make it a new iconic art education center in Chicago and even the world, and will also be a great cultural asset for everyone in this city. Chicago ushered in the era of modernist skyscrapers, and its city skyline has always been a model for emerging cities to imitate. Compared with the glory of modernist architectural civilization created by Chicago in the past hundred years, this museum that closely links nature and people, memory and imagination, has a more important mission to inspire the desire for the future in the hearts of the next generation of young people.
