Cover image for ‘The Cloudscape of Haikou’ is almost completed

MAD led by Ma Yansong, released the design of Haikou's "Cloud Cave Library". The one-piece white building is like a multi-dimensional space-time tunnel, connecting the city and the coast, reality and imagination. This is a public space that combines the functions of a library and a coastal trail station, where people can rest, read, relax, and watch the sea. Medium-sized outdoor performances and concerts can also be held around it. The building has entered the construction stage and is expected to be completed in 2021.

As an important island city in southern China, Haikou was once an important stop on the Maritime Silk Road. With the establishment of Hainan International Tourism Island and Hainan Free Trade Zone, Haikou's international influence is growing day by day. "Yundong Library" is located in Century Park on the shore of Haikou Bay, facing the South China Sea, and is an important node in the launch plan of Haikou's coastal public space. At present, many world-renowned architects have participated in the design of Haikou Binhai Station, and "Yundong Library" will be the starting point of the overall plan.

The building is cast in white concrete, integrating the inside and outside to form multiple semi-outdoor spaces and platforms. The curly concrete wall is not only an organic architectural structure, but also a link connecting different spaces, integrating the wall, floor and ceiling. Large and small holes are organic breathing holes, which also bring natural light into the depths of the space. The gray space of the corridor outside the building provides shade and ventilation for the hot environment of Haikou, allowing passers-by to stop and rest while watching the sea.

The internal functions of the "Yundong Library" are composed of two parts. The reading space is 690 square meters and can store 10,000 books, including a cafe, a reading area and a roof terrace; the station, which serves as a public service area, is about 300 square meters and includes public toilets and showers with natural lighting and ventilation, a drinking water area, and a bicycle parking area.

The building uses CNC templates for overall concrete pouring, and 3D printed templates for partial pouring to meet the construction accuracy requirements of complex curved concrete walls. Equipment pipelines are hidden in the concrete cavity to minimize the visual interference of equipment on the space. The openable glass curtain wall and curved sliding door provide a better sea view and ventilation effect. To adapt to the hot local climate conditions, the eaves on the sunny side adopt a cantilever design to reduce heat radiation through physical shading to achieve sustainable energy-saving buildings.
