MAD's original intention in designing the "Mushroom Chair" was to place it freely in any environment and any scene (indoor or outdoor public space) according to the user's wishes and different conditions of space, environment and needs. When someone is using it or not, it creates completely different scenes - it can bring comfort to people and can also be used as a sculpture. In this way, it attempts to get rid of the traditional restrictions and usage rules of furniture, and explores more possibilities in the relationship between furniture, people and space with organic forms and "growth" as the theme.

Founded in 1984, Sawaya & Moroni is one of Italy's most famous high-end production and design companies. It constantly tries to explore the future form and possibilities of furniture design. It has previously collaborated with many architectural masters including Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Jean Nouvel, Massimiliano Fuksas, and boldly incorporated architectural inspiration into furniture design. Ma Yansong said: "The works that Sawaya & Moroni collaborates with other architects are very unique and avant-garde. This time, the Mushroom Chair was redesigned in the hope that furniture can develop freely in different forms. Free and unconstrained."

The prototype of the Mushroom Chair was first designed and displayed for a public art event at Zhangjiang Science Park in Pudong, Shanghai. It is between public facilities and sculptures, with basic organic forms in infinite combinations, scattered in the urban environment. The new version in collaboration with Sawaya & Moroni has new applications in terms of materials and production, and redefines the form, scale, and relationship between furniture and the environment.
