Hainan Science and Technology Museum is a provincial science and technology museum in Hainan Province. Located in the Changxiu area on the west coast of Haikou City, the Science and Technology Museum is home to Wuyuanhe National Wetland Park and sports stadiums. It is an important science popularization base and a high-quality tourist attraction for the Hainan Free Trade Port.

MAD's proposal combines Hainan's urban characteristics, site environmental conditions, and the vision of the science and technology museum to create a scenario where "primitive rainforest meets future technology". The main exhibition hall is shaped like a cloud, in dialogue with the natural world; the corridor extending from the main exhibition hall provides a new type of urban public space for citizens; the rich and diverse tropical rainforest creates an overall landscape.

The total construction area of this project is 46,528 square meters, and the above-ground construction area is 27,782 square meters. The above-ground venues mainly include the main building of the Science and Technology Museum, the planetarium, the wind and rain corridor, and the outdoor square.

From a distance in the city, the main building of the Science and Technology Museum rises in a spiral. When visitors enter the park, they can see the Science and Technology Museum floating above the jungle. The skin of the Science and Technology Museum is made of FRP material, like a silver reflector, which is very futuristic.

As Hainan has a humid and rainy climate with plenty of sunshine, the corridor provides a comfortable environment for citizens to shelter from the rain. With the main exhibition hall of the Science and Technology Museum as the core, the undulating overhead corridor extends in all directions, allowing visitors to enter from all angles. The corridor connects venues with different functions. The north side of the corridor is the giant screen theater and the flying theater, and the southwest corner is the planetarium and astronomical observatory.

Hainan Science and Technology Museum adopts a unique and novel structural system, which consists of three ground-to-ceiling core tubes, curved trusses, roofs, and spiral ramps, achieving a harmonious unity of architectural effects and structural systems.

When visitors enter the venue, they look up and see that the interior of the science and technology museum is connected by a spiral slope through the exhibition space. The skylight shines through the glass dome into the spacious atrium, which is bright and warm.

The main body of the Science and Technology Museum is six stories high, with five floors above ground and one floor underground. The indoor tour route is designed from top to bottom. Visitors can first take the core tube elevator directly to the 360-degree observation deck on the top floor to overlook the sea and city landscape.

Then visit the cutting-edge technology and space exhibition halls on the same floor, and along the ramp, transition to the ocean and life science exhibition hall on the fourth floor, the mathematics and science wave on the third floor, and the multimedia interactive experience area and children's playground on the second floor.

As visitors walk down the ramp, they can enjoy the outdoor scenery through the glass curtain wall, or take a peek at the exhibition halls on different floors through the open ramp space.

The ramp exhibition halls also have exhibition content to extend the exhibition experience.

The overall environment of the Science and Technology Museum is surrounded by rich and diverse tropical plants, and there are places for natural education everywhere. The outdoor crater-shaped sunken square, reflection pool, and gray space under the corridor are public spaces for daily rest. In addition to visiting the exhibition, visitors can also enjoy a large natural environment.

Hainan Science and Technology Museum is a place to discover the mysteries of science and nature. It is not only a place to inspire the public's curiosity about science, but also a place to gather public wisdom and encourage the public to seek imagination from cities and nature.

The project is currently in the stage of deepening the construction drawings and is expected to start in August 2021 and be completed and put into use in 2024.
